  GO AND STAND IN A FIELD

well i'm glad you asked, there aren't a huge number of people i want to see but still probably more than i'll get the chance to. priorities are: the flaming lips, the streets, radiohead (i guess, altho they do clash with super furries, so it's a tough call, but i haf only seen radiohead once compared to sfa 7 plus the new radiohead is do you know what actually pretty fucking cool! so i guess that's that. plus i'm bound to see sfa later in the year when they tour and i definitely will *not* go to see the 'head anywhere else. so there.), um who else, i guess love, 80s matchbox perhaps, calexico perhaps, de la soul perhaps, beth gibbons perhaps, DEFINITELY EROL ALKAN AND SOULWAX actually that's a priority. (oh yeah maybe yo la tengo - ha, tangent ------->

i finally got and then nothing turned itself inside-out the other day and yes it's pretty good, it does sound like the cover looks! starts off great, first half v.good, then there's a couple of pretty unbearable twee things in the middle where it's hard to resist the urge to shout 'yes but SO FUCKING WHAT YOU AND YR GIRLFRIEND MAKE EACH OTHER SAD SOMETIMES GIVE A SHIT!!!!!!' i mean please why do they think anyone cares? honestly. mainly i think i like yo la tengo when the drums are given more space in the mix and the regrettable indie-schmindie WAKE UP IT"S NOT 1986 vocals take a back seat because when they bother the drums are really pretty excelltn (NOTE TO SELF it's about time i wrote something about why drums are the best instrument, well my favourite anyway, ah, drums, friend, mother, secret lover) still i'd see them live again cos i'm curious to know if, now i know some songs a bit better, they seem better or worse, you see?

ok Pink Flag i admire as a concept and a statement but let's be honest i'm not that hooked on so many of the songs yet, i'm sure i will be given time but it's a slow process, definitely form over content at this point (NO BAD THING OF COURSE), but on the other hand, the bought-only-two-days-ago Chairs Missing OHMYGOD where has this been all my life. Shit. 'Practice Makes Perfect.' 'French Film Blurred.' 'Sand In My Joints.' 'Mercy.' 'I Am The Fly.' 'Heartbeat.' 'From The Nursery.' but especially ohsweetjesus especially these two: 'A Question Of Degree' (actually a bonus track on the re-release, it was a non-album single eventually, i mean, a single?! 1978 takes the piss!) is so deeply wonderful i know i haven't even heard everything in it yet, the bit that stuck indelibly to my mind last nite was when totally without warning the little skitter-skatter hi-hat comes in like it's a fucking techno record or something!. anyway, that's a very good song. BUT ABOVE ALL PLEASE I BESEECH YOU DO IT NOW DO IT FOR YOUR SOUL download/buy/copy/steal 'Outdoor Miner.' straight into the (at the moment very short) list of 100% perfect songs i am compiling in my head. please, please hear this, this song is too much to bear it's so beautiful. and it's only 1.45 long! when the fade-out starts after about 90 seconds something just gives way inside me it's too much, somehow i think something is being communicated: having a pop song so pretty and so delicate leave so quickly feels like a young life snuffed out, you know, or a wonderful relationship ending before it's had a chance, i don't know, you have to hear it and see if you know what i mean.

BUT NOT ONLY THAT

on this re-released version of the album they also include the extended version of the song! joy of joys. this is the same song, so, of course, it's perfect, but because it's a minute or so longer it's inevitably less perfect. HOWEVER this is forgivable because they use the extra minute to include the weirdest, spookiest dying-fairground, end-of-the-collapsing-pier piano sound ever, it trips along quietly in the background of the verse then GETS ITS OWN LITTLE BREAK in place of a middle 8 because a song this perfectly formed doesn't need a middle 8 or none of that shit of course! Wire i love you and i will happily ignore your probably embarrassing lyrics for a long time yet as long as i can just think about music as lovely as this.

  YENTOB ON RAP: THE COUNTDOWN CONTINUES!!!

I told ya, I'm keeping an open mind. It might be really good! Still, these quotes from some promo interviews he's done for the series do not inspire!

Mr Yentob also visited New York and Los Angeles while making the film, which he described as "tracing the roots of an exhilarating but unsettling youth phenomenon that turns over billions of dollars a year". Source: what is this, a frickin' thesis? gimme a break, i don't remember where i got it!

ok ok i dunno the word 'unsettling' is a bit unsettling in there, but at least it's twinned with 'exhilarating' so maybe it's not all bad.

He admitted that he was a fan of "some rap music", including Eminem's recent hit Cleaning Out My Closet, partly through picking up on the music his son listens to.

d'oh why did he have to choose that it's like the lamest Eminem single ever! ok, cheap shot, making fun of old people's music taste, fish, barrel etc.

ok, violence isn't good, let's all agree ("stop the violence" is what, 1986???) but language? interested to see what he means here. surely not 'swearing?' as in, the teacher at simon armitage's school: "this school does not like poems with language in them." complaining about bad language in rap seems like just a little bit of a missed point, but still.

A nation holds its breath, must remember to watch it whilst packing for Glastonbury!!!

1 - please someone remind me of the (for our purposes, not etymological) origin of the phrase 'weekend warriors.' i know i heard it somewhere and it was funny, and it's in my head, but i can't for the life of me remember the incident! one of you must know. who said it to me?

2 - this wednesday pm on bbc1 mr alan yentob will be presenting a documentary about hip hop! apparently he's going to be talking to (among, Others), eminem, chuck d, jay-z, nas, ice-t, ms.dynamite (?!), the roots, and common. i will bite my tongue and not pre-empt his findings, who knows, he might come up with something sensible and realistic (note: the only possible conclusion mr.yentob could reach which would NOT be totally ridiculous, unbelievable, platitudinous, meaningless, insulting and all of that, would be 'i don't understand and i don't hope too. it's too confusing. oh well. it's not for me to understand. still, it's pretty interesting, i'll be interested to see what happens.' if he DOES say this then more power to him and lots of respect, yes yes, fair play, maybe that's what he will end up with. but inevitably the reactionary in me fears and expects, (especially looking at that list of contributors, which charts such a corny timeworn liberally-accepted trajectory of 'bad boy gangsters' to 'nice politically sensitive people') that it will be the same old 'oh dear this rap music's a bit nasty isn't it, they don't like women and gay people very much, ah, but it's ok, some of them are quite nice, and don't shout quite so much, and even say positive things in their songs!' bullshit that comes out *every single time.* sigh. i'm not really that worked up, just was talking about this over the weekend so it's in my head. (the fog is in my head?).

to summarize (and y'all know when i say that it means, hold on, hear comes at least one more paragraph of incoherence!) what i'm getting at is, i have never seen the mainstream british (er, white) media be anything other than a ludicrously blunt and insensitive tool when it comes to discussing hip hop. so little can be achieved in an hour long tv programme, or a 2000 word article, that i kind of think it would be better to just say (if you have to say anything), 'we don't have enough time/space to get into these issues really.' but of course no-one can say that. and of course no issue is ever really properly taken up by tv, really, or newspapers, much, so why does it bother me with hip hop when it blatantly doesn't bother me that much with anything else? i dunno, i just guess the ignorance is so shameless: the attempts to engage and understand are so feeble. come on alan yentob, surprise us, please!

Some would draw your attention to U*b*n Thr**t Exp*r**nc*'s mindblowing single release earlier this year, 'Timberlake felches Beckham' and its similarly earth-shattering b side, '...or is is the other way around?, singles which call into question the need for anyone to ever make music again.

I'm not sure I've heard more than 3 albums released this year in their entirety, and I haven't really loved any of them. But who gives a shit?   A JOURNEY, SOME THOUGHTS, ETC

Soho (work) --> (bus) Euston (football) --> (car, 80s r'n'b) Elephant & Castle (dropped off) --> (tube) Clapham North (lost fone) --> (walk, bus) Clapham Common (dinner) --> (tube, walk) Elephant again (retrieve fone) --> (walk, tube, walk) Brixton (bed).

Walking thru Elephant around midnight, it was pretty quiet. Some huge tower blocks, monolithic (is that a loaded word? what value judgements am I implying in the word monolithic? does it attribute certain attributes to the people who live there?). What is my instant, instinctive reaction to seeing these things? Heart sinks. Imagine living there. (someone long time ago said they thought tower blocks looked 'soul-destroying.' Have always, obviously, easily, resisted, hated that reaction. I Love Tower Blocks. I love the way they look. Is this really an aesthetic reaction (do i like the way they look?) or is it a socio-economic judgement manifested as aesthetic? what is the difference? is there one?) (brackets out of control now). (must seek out: Up They Rise, Jon Savage on/with Jamie Reid, tower blocks as image, the modernist grid, the simplest representation of any system, lines crossing. Does the shape of the building you live in influence the way you see the world? of course it does. what about the view from your window?) (also note to self, Jamie Reid! designs 'Jamie Reid's Magic Room' in the Hotel Pelirocco, Brighton. must-see. Jamie and Magic. (and his magic torch! 2nd time i've seen words Jamie + Magic linked. there is some kind of link isn't there? similar shape. is there?))))) ie how have tower blocks shaped/created the environment they exist in.

Anyway, the point was...why do I look at the blocks and something inside me is afraid. Don't I love the blocks? I am not like the people who live there. We would not be friends. I like the image; i fear the implication. The middle-class gaze, haha, nervous relative of the male gaze.

I'm fizzling out. Just thinking aloud, y'know.

  A GOOD WEEKEND

Wasn't it just? Marvellous. Friday night drinks in Brixton + Clapham, walking down the street with bags full of beer. Important tunes = Heard It Through The Grapevine, as ever, also House Of Jealous Lovers (DFA remix!) and of course Bodyrock as is compulsory in Toby's house. Altogther now...doo doo de doo de doo, doo doo de doo de doo....

Then a barbecue on Sat pm I MEAN ARE THEY TAKING THE PISS HOW FUCKING HOT WAS IT???? excellent, Illmatic and white russians in the back garden, it's all about the fake bling yo. (More beer had been carried in bags)

Carried beer in bags to the party in Camden, good, good party, too much music of note to note. Matters arising:

- Destiny's Child vs. Roots Manuva (Me: Destiny's Child! Obviously)
- Lou Reed vs. Fawlty Towers (Everyone: Fawlty Towers)
- Father Ted vs. Sugababes (I might have imagined this one. Anyway I'm pretty sure the correct answer is Sugababes!)
- The Kinks vs. Michael Jackson (Brendan: Michael Jackson)
- The Beatles vs. Monty Python (Tom's inspired dilemma, and impossible to solve)
- and best of all
- Big Brother vs. Real Life (all agreed on Big Brother. Best reason = Tom: 'Big Brother because it's edited.')

And then last night had a mini kickaround and watched Die Another Day on a big screen on Clapham Common. It was like a mini-festival, mini-Glastonbury warm-up vibe. Also, brilliantly, this is pretty obviously the best Bond film ever. I mean, disappearing cars! The bit when it looks just like the Goldeneye computer game! Halle Berry (round of applause from the audience)! And the kite-boarding over the cliff to escape from a tidal wave bit takes so much piss, loved it, loved it, loved it.

And now it's Monday...

  ...watched Donnie Darko last night, and jotted down some thoughts I had about it. It's more of a response than a review, and as such it's all a bit obvious and reads a bit like an essay. Still, this way my incoherent thoughts can plague someone else for a change...


Donnie Darko - I died in 1988

No song could be more superficially apt to commence Donnie Darko than Echo and the Bunnymen’s The Killing moon; bunnies, killing, the eighties, it’s all there. Though it bears little relation to McCulloch’s oblique, fateful lyrics, Bill Drummond’s personal quest for the mythological Echo seems to have been curiously anticipated in Graham Greene’s The Destructors (1954). Donnie summarises ‘they just want to see what happens when they tear the world apart’. Rehearsed by Greene, Drummond and the KLF torched a million pounds in reprise of this anarchic and childlike urge to scramble the order of things in a single flicker.

So an Echo was the starting point. Donnie Darko is couched in memory, but this cultural free-association - the eighties, ET, Back to the future, Dirty Dancing - retells a decade just beyond recollection. This is not an unconscious fabrication, as Donnie asserts ‘no-one remembers their infancy and anyone who says they do is lying’. (Richard Kelly, the writer/director was widely praised for forging such a mature film while in his early twenties.) Nobody wants to remember childhood as a period of worry and uncertainty. Reassuringly the fragments we possess expose a glossy, super-saturated filmic reality, the latent sources of which are reaffirmed by television repeats of films we may or may not have seen the first time round. The hyper-1980s of Donnie Darko, with its casting of Patrick Swayze and Drew Barrymore, is the 1980s of our memory, true or false; the teacher warns ‘and did you stop to think that maybe infants need darkness?’ Reinventing the 1980s isn’t a return to childhood, it’s a denial of childhood’s danger and disorder.

In common with the KLF, arson is Donnie’s modus operandi. While his acts of vandalism are seemingly motiveless, they are also unerringly redemptive; the high-school hothouse of conflict and repression is quenched with a flood, then Cunningham’s dark secret is damned by fire. Rather than tearing the world apart, Donnie’s manic assualts on the order of things seem to uncover a more satisfying reality. Memory, time and space are united in their plasticity, and Donnie’s delusions seem more acceptable than the foetid deception of Jim Cunningham or the dogmatic Puritanism of the PTA. As Greene would have it, ‘destruction after all is a form of creation’. Whilst inhabiting a fantastical 1980s elegy, Donnie Darko is himself convinced of the value in questioning the tidy assumptions of his environment.

Daydreams appear significant for Kelly, as does gesture. Gretchen and Donnie’s delayed first kiss embodies the tantra of juvenilia, and when they do make love it is indicated merely by a chaste holding of hands, a reverent nod to the sublimated sexual tensions of Ferris Bueller. And it is with a gesture that the final Echo is sounded. Gretchen pauses to wave to Donnie’s mother, and with a hazy recognition the present acknowledges the past, not as empty relic, but as waking dream.

- Big Brother slash Interactive TV slash Reality TV slash Docusoap TV slash Social Experiment TV it's like it's US up on the SCREEN right there, our lives in red green and blue, the people, us, them, we're all the same you see and WHAT'S MORE you can control what happens by sending us ( I mean them) a text or some such, you choose your popstars this way, and in this way by sitting at home and WATCHING ie CONSUMING your life can be represented on the SCREEN also, you see if we have more of a stake in what we are consuming it is more compelling to us also we are happier with ourselves because we are not PASSIVE but in fact ACTIVE nay ESSENTIAL TO THE SUCCESS OF THAT WHICH we consume. Yah furthermore I will be brief y'dig we are ALL THE SAME arn't we yes yes you see those people right there they are the same as us you know and we are actually all the same you know and in this medium the universal the everywhere-seen the far-seeing television we are getting closer and closer and the gap between what WE DO AND WE LIVE and what we SEE AND CONSUME is shrinking and shrinking and you know really what is the difference really anyway I mean those people on the TV i feel like i know them you know yes and what matters is that when it is like this the impulse to consume is so much better regulated and in my own hands yes i am in charge i am in control i press the button i send the text i vote her out i vote him in i win i win i hate him i hate him i hate him flick flick flick flick flick flick flick EVERYONE ELSE IN THE COUNTRY IN THE WORLD ACTUALLY WELL THAT BIT OF THE WORLD THAT MATTERS THE BIT WHERE PEOPLE ARE LIKE ME is doing exactly the same thing we're all doing the same thing we're all the same it's wonderful i feel so connected and so close to everyone it's warm in here i love it i love it i love

- um. here's an idea. i recently made a tape for someone (Jake) so why don't i post up the tracklisting it might be interesting to you i know i always like looking at mix tapes. in fact maybe you are familiar with The Art Of The Mix which is a place where people put up the tracklists of mixes they have made it's always good for a gander. maybe we could do that here, every time you make a tape or a cd for yourself or anyone else just write up the list here, that would be cool. in fact you don'\t even have to make it, just post imaginary tracklists. i spend enough time making tapes in my head anyway why not stick em up right here eh? good stuff. anyway here it is it doesn't have a name:

- Finally here are a couple of links to blogs of fairly regularly mind-blowing brain-warping brilliance and fascination seriously folks it's all good. The first is by Simon Reynolds and is called Blissblog and the most recent post is a deeply brilliant and entertaining index of the hipness quotient of various bands artists scenes genres etc as voted for by sundry luminaries of the world of hip music journalism. NOTA BENE that a lot of the stuff on my tape falls into the 'irredeemably unhip' or 'passe and middlebow' categories haha I lose I lose I lose!
